Take Chances! Make Mistakes! Get Messy! -Ms. Frizzle
Through passion, excitement, and dedication I strive to be the best teacher, artist, and learner I can be. Teaching is all about the kids and igniting their passion for learning and the arts. I wish to promote positive learning, creative problem solving, artistic exploration, create an environment that is nurturing to the budding artist, and open up a door for students to walk through and explore.
When parents think of the art classroom they usually don’t think of their students gaining a life skill. For the most part they think of it as an easy class and an easy A for their child. The art classroom fosters so many skills many parents don’t think about when they think of classroom learning. Motor skills, hand to eye coordination, creative thinking, creative problem solving, and learning to see are just some of the important skills I foster and encourage in my teaching. Students can feel free to express themselves with the skills they gain from me and create something beautiful out of nothing. Failure should be seen as a positive thing to grow from so whether it takes a student one try or one hundred, students in my classroom will work hard to gain and sharpen skills that are not just important in the art world but in their everyday life.
What is creativity? Creativity has been defined as: “The ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc.; originality, progressiveness, or imagination.” How do we as teachers take a group of students that we only see once a week and work with them to be create? We can’t flip a switch on a student’s brain and turn on their creativity for fifty minutes. Frankly, a lot of students will probably take most of the class to finally feel ready to begin creating. Ten minutes later the school bell rings and the kids flip off their switch and go back to their academics. I believe that art and creativity shouldn’t be reserved for just the art classroom. Students should be creative in all aspects of life. Creative problem solving is a life skill that should be supported by all teachers in all academics. Within my own classroom I want to make sure my students know that creativity should happen outside these four walls. Creativity isn’t something that should be “switched” on and off but something all students pursue in every aspect of their lives.
